While this is a little outside our normal subject matter, we really appreciated the creativity behind photographer Seth Casteel's photos of diving dogs. When designing or photographing a home, you have a pretty good idea of what the outcome will be. Lay on the bottom of a pool full of dogs chasing balls though, and you have no idea what you may capture!!

The panels are said to prevent moisture build-up (reducing mold), are completely silent, and create no air movement throughout the room. Sounds like a great way to add style and warmth to the home!

To Clear or Not to Clear?

Whether we are fortunate enough to have a generous expanse of kitchen counters, or are faced with a postage-stamp sized work surface, the eternal debate seems to be: keep the counter clear, or keep appliances handy? Rachel Meeks from the Small Notebook blog contends that counters are a work space and should be kept clear. (Read the post) Others, of course, would argue that the kitchen counter is the perfect place for spices, cooking utensils, and other daily-use items.

While clear counters sound like a great concept, how realistic are they in your home? From appliances, homework and mail to toys, tools and "I'll deal with it later" items, it can be hard to keep such a tempting expanse clear! A great idea is to add one or more appliance garages in strategic areas of the kitchen. A garage for the coffee maker near the sink, another near the desk area for homework, and one at the end of the peninsula for the "miscellaneous" stuff can help keep everything handy-and clear!

How Well Are You Using Your Space?

How efficiently are you using the square footage of your home? Are you making use of a wide hallway to showcase art, or using the space under the staircase for a cozy reading nook? Is the placement of furniture making the room seem larger, or causing an awkward traffic flow?

If the answer to any of these questions is "no" or "I'm not sure," it may be a good idea to bring in an interior designer to take an objective look at your home. Living Large In A Small House

Could you live in a 983 square foot house? Easy, right? After all, that was the average size of a home in 1950. (By 2007, the average was over 2,000 square feet!) What about 750, 600, or even fewer than 100 square feet? That might be a bit more challenging for most of us, but the "small house" movement is gaining steam, driven by the desire to live a more simple life and use fewer resources.

The house pictured at left, by Tumbleweed Houses, measures 130 square feet and includes a kitchen, living room and sleeping loft. In Salem Oregon, Ideabox is building a "micro neighborhood" of five mini homes averaging 600 - 750 square feet (read more). Architect Sarah Susanka has written a number of books on the "Not So Big" theme, and blogs, forums and "how-to" sites are popping up with advice for buying, building, and living small.

When you think of San Francisco and architecture, you generally picture one of the city's famed Victorian style homes. We found a great article about a pair of homeowners who transformed a crumbling Victorian into the bright, contemporary home pictured at left. The redesigned house features solar panels, a garden roof, and a steel exoskeleton that acts as a necessary seismic upgrade. The Houzz blog recently featured an article on reinventing pallets that included headboards, coffee tables and a seriously cool jewelry organizer, and YouTube is full of how-to videos for homes (seriously!) and more.

Finish Enhancements - Glazing

Glazing is a very popular add-on to cabinets – it enhances the details of the door style and "hangs up" in distress marks, carved accents and moulding profiles. The material is flooded over the wood surface and then hand-wiped, making each piece unique. Glaze will settle into "open" woods such as Red Oak and Hickory, so the grain pattern will be more noticeable. On all wood species, a little bit of glaze will be retained across the entire surface, subtly altering the base color.

At Canyon Creek, we offer Glazing in five different colors: Chocolate, Licorice, Pewter, Suede and Vanilla. Each color reacts differently with the various wood species and especially the stain or paint color selected. It is always a good idea to order a sample in the combination you've chosen!

Let's take a look at each of the colors...

Chocolate is our most popular glaze option, as the warm, rich brown works well with all of our light to medium stain colors. Keep in mind that the darker glaze colors will be very noticeable on lighter stains, and create quite a bit of contrast. Left: CG on Rustic Maple (Cinnamon). Top: CG on Cherry (Hazelnut).

Licorice is a rich, deep black, and works well with medium stain colors and paints. Both Licorice and Chocolate are frequently paired with Rustic species and/or Artisan distressing. At left, you can see how the glaze material settles into the simulated cracks, distress marks and carved edges of Artisan 3. LG on Alder (Chicory).

Pewter is a fairly neutral, mid-tone gray that pairs nicely with white paint and darker stain colors. The sample at left is an excellent example of how glaze will bring out the grain pattern of woods such as Red Oak and Hickory. Notice the difference between the subtle tones of Pewter and the brighter, higher contrast of Vanilla, at bottom. PG on Red Oak (Mulberry).

Suede is a beautiful, warm caramel color, and quite subtle on all but the lightest colors. The sample at left shows how Suede helps blend the natural color variations of Hickory. SG on Rustic Hickory (Natural).

Vanilla is a soft white glaze that is very versatile - it gives an "at the beach" feel to medium stains and paints and creates a crisp accent on darker colors. Doors with rope mouldings, like Dakota (left), Limoges and Prescott Solid, look great with Vanilla or Pewter glaze, as both colors help soften all that detail. PG on Red Oak (Espresso).

Wild salmon are just starting to move into NW rivers, and that has us thinking about recipes for this fresh seasonal bounty. Salmon is an excellent source of omega-3s (which reduce inflammation), vitamin D, and a host of other nutrients. Wild Pacific salmon are plentiful due to careful management, and this promises to be a record year.

From wood plank grilled or parchment wrapped to glazed, poached and baked, there are hundreds of recipes for indoor and outdoor cooking. (And don't forget dips, salads, appetizers, even salmon chowder - yum!) Lemon and butter are classic ingredients, along with teriyaki, brown sugar, and pepper, but new flavors are being introduced all the time.

The more pages you flag, the more likely it is that a trend will start to emerge that your designer can identify. Plus, you can point out specific details that are an absolute "must have." From that, your designer can create a truly personalized kitchen.

Websites are another great resource – most manufacturers (including us!) have a photo gallery filled with product and/or room photos that will provide lots of great ideas.

Showrooms, stores, hotels, and restaurants can also provide ideas for colors, lighting and fabrics. And don't forget your friends' new or remodeled kitchens – there may be all sorts of ideas you can borrow!

For the final "summer in review" post, here's a few more updates and new products:

Sand-Thru to Wood, originally available with painted or burnished colors only, is now available with all finishes.

Two new colors of finial hinges - pewter and black - were added for Inset cabinetry.

Asymmetrical corner cabinets were added to wall and base sections for both Cornerstone and Millennia. These cabinets are a great way to get maximum function out of every inch of space!

Rustic Beech

Beech has quickly become one of our most popular wood species, and in June we expanded the offering with the introduction of Rustic Beech for both Cornerstone and Millennia.

Rustic Beech shares the same attributes as Beech, with a more pronounced grain pattern and a random blend of natural characteristics. For those of you familiar with Canyon Creek's P&S Guide, Rustic Beech follows the same rules and availability as Rustic Alder.

We've recently added more doors and more colors to our Bamboo offering for Millennia frameless cabinetry.

Bamboo is now available on Windsor Square, Shaker Solid, Duet Solid, Valley Forge Solid and Normandy Solid. New colors are Burgundy, Cayenne, Java, Natural, Opal and Pecan.

Solano, Dover and Nova continue to be available in Pecan and now also in Toffee.

We recently photographed a project that had some interesting design features. We're starting to see the microwave placed below countertop level more and more often - in this case, to make it easier for the grandkids to reach.

Canyon Creek Appoints Doug Chadwick Executive VP

Canyon Creek Cabinet Company recently announced that its board of directors has promoted Doug Chadwick to the role of executive vice president. Doug oversees sales, marketing and customer service, as well as areas of continuous improvement, product engineering and development, purchasing and materials. Doug will continue to report to Canyon Creek president & CEO Bill Weaver.

For the last 10 years, Doug has been the VP of sales & marketing for Canyon Creek. Before joining Canyon Creek, Chadwick spent over 10 years in roles of increasing responsibility and seniority at Starmark/Fieldstone. Bill Weaver says, “Doug’s extensive background of over 35 years in the cabinetry business, combined with his deep understanding of Canyon Creek, will continue to be a valuable asset to the company’s long-term business plans.”

Canyon Creek hosts KCMA Fall Plant Tour

The Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association’s (KCMA) annual tour of cabinet manufacturing facilities made a stop at Canyon Creek on October 5, 2009. The tour at Canyon Creek followed a weekend management conference and supplier’s exposition in Bellevue, WA. The Canyon Creek plant was previously on the 2002 KCMA plant tour.

Over 160 industry professionals toured Canyon Creek. Primarily composed of vendors and cabinet manufacturers, the tour is an opportunity for participants to see various technologies and processes applied in real time.
